Gaarden ferries SECUNDUS and PRIMUS

The City Ferry Kiel was a ferry connection in Kiel , which ran a 300 meter long route across the Kiel Fjord between the old town on the west bank ( 54 ° 19 ′ 11 ″  N , 10 ° 8 ′ 21.8 ″  E ) and the Gaarden district ( 54 ° 19 ′ 2.9 ″  N , 10 ° 8 ′ 27 ″  E ) traversed.

history

In July 1904 the plans to build a ferry line to connect the city center with Gaarden were accepted after the construction of a bridge, a tunnel or a transporter ferry had initially been discussed. Finally, a total of 430,000 marks were approved for the construction of the ferries and jetties.

For the operation of the ferry were three double-ended ferries in the Howaldtswerken ordered the first 1,907 of which came into service. The final costs for the three ships totaled 640,000 marks and for the jetties 300,000 marks.

The ferry service was discontinued in World War II and not resumed after the war. From 1952 to 1962, a private passenger ferry service was operated on the route.

Ships

The ferries used on the route were each 30 meters long, 10.50 meters wide and had a draft of 3.51 meters. The side height was 4.41 meters. The ferries were powered by a steam engine. With an engine output of 350 hp, they ran around eight knots .

The ferries were called Primus ( construction number 463, completed in 1907), Secundus (construction number 646, completed at the end of July 1908) and Tertius (construction number 465). The Secundus ferry was soon decommissioned and sold. The Tertius , which was sunk by bombs in 1944 , was lifted after the war and used as a swimming pontoon off Düsternbrook from 1948 to 1952 before it was scrapped. The Primus was sold in 1945 to the administration of the Kiel Canal , which it used as a canal ferry in Brunsbüttel until the end of the 1960s. It was then sold to a hydraulic engineering company, which it used as a working framework.

The ships were approved for 600 people. There was also space on the ferries for three horse-drawn vehicles and later several vehicles. They were able to cross the ferry on a central “passage”. The ferry's steering position was located above the “passage”.
