Saint Livier, Pontiffroy

The Church of St. Livier is a destroyed Catholic church in the Pontiffroy district of Metz .

history

Next to the Church of St. Clement you can find the remains of the Church of St. Livier, which was founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries .

At first the church was under the patronage of the martyr Polyeuctus . After the relics of St. Livarius (French: Saint Livier or Saint Livaire) had been transferred, the sacred building received its new patronage. Livarius was an officer from Metz who defended the city against enemies and suffered martyrdom in the process.

The parish of St. Livier was abolished in 1791 during the French Revolution and merged with the parish of Saint-Vincent. The church was abandoned and its area released for residential development.

The demolition of the historic buildings in the old quarter in the 1970s led to its partial destruction. The narthex and part of the nave are preserved in a small square in the middle.
