St. Afra Chapel

The St. Afra Chapel in Schelklingen from the 14th century is one of the oldest church buildings in Baden-Württemberg . According to dendrological studies, trees were felled for church building around 1262. According to the research, the construction of the choir can be dated to the year 1303, the church interior to the year 1375. The chapel is also important because of its wall paintings in the fresco style . Two phases of painting can be distinguished here: the majority of the paintings, especially those of the choir, can be dated to the 1330s or the 1340s at the latest. The second phase of painting dates from the beginning of the 16th century. The date 1509 is preserved as a fresco. This time the nave in particular was painted. These younger paintings are less well preserved than the older ones. The paintings were discovered by a craftsman around 1880; City pastor Wilhelm Hummel had it uncovered in 1881 and the history painter Leopold Weinmayer from Munich added a painting over it. A second restoration was carried out in the 1970s. A detailed description of the paintings can be found in Markus Hösch (2004).

The building is a listed building and has been entered in the list of Schelklingen architectural monuments.
