St. Agatha is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Freiburg district of Benzhausen .

history

The Agathenkapelle is mentioned for the first time in 1596, although the community of Benzhausen was mentioned in 788 in a document from the St. Gallen monastery .

The chapel was rebuilt in 1699 after being destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The portal, the Gothic choir window and the remains of the frescoes exposed behind the altar point to the older chapel. The existing building mass was used and can still be seen today. This rectangular chapel with a gable roof was created by using the masonry of the rear wall of the choir and the late Gothic portal with massive buttresses. In 1725 the old turret was torn down and replaced by a roof turret with an onion hood. In 1788 there was a dispute over the preservation of this branch chapel. The dispute ended in 1790 with the construction of a new rectory. In 1820 the Joseph altar was bought from the Freiburg cathedral. In addition to the altarpiece by Johann Dengler from Munich, the two statues of St. Agatha and Maria Magdalena are shown. This is attributed to Andres Hochsing from Freiburg. In 1844 it was found that the ridge turret was wormed; therefore it was replaced in 1859 by a new roof turret with a pyramid helmet. 1973–1975 the Archbishop's Building Department carried out an exterior and interior renovation, taking care to preserve the original color scheme.
