St. Altfrid Church with steeple

The St. Altfrid Church is a Catholic branch church built in 1985 in the Freisenbruch district of Essen . It is named after the holy Altfrid , one of the diocese cartridge of the Diocese of Essen . It is the only church consecrated to him in the diocese of Essen. As a sign that the colliery was dying at that time , the church tower is deliberately based on the construction of a headframe .

history

Church building

In 1971 the pastoral care center St. Altfrid was built on the property of farmer Schulte-Vieting. Previously, the church was supposed to be built on a parking lot opposite (today Vitushaus). For cost reasons, an agreement was reached with the diocese of Essen on a smaller solution.

After a church service on August 16, 1984, construction work on the St. Altfrid Church began with the groundbreaking ceremony , so that the foundation stone was finally laid on February 2, 1985 as planned . This consists of solid sandstone , the Altfrid monogram , the year 1984 and is still clearly visible today near the altar.

The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on May 21, 1985, the topping-out wreath was blessed and hoisted over the future Altfridkirche with a construction crane.

A scout tribe of the same name of the DPSG has existed in the youth rooms of the community since 1978 .

Church closure 2020

After the last service on March 28, 2020 the church will be closed.

Furnishing

Steeple

The idea of the community at that time was to acquire a headframe as a church tower in the sign of the colliery closings. However, it quickly became apparent that dismantling, transport and reconstruction would be too expensive and that the statics were not correct. Based on these facts and a donation from Franz Cardinal Hengsbach in the amount of 10,000 DM, a more cost-effective new construction was decided. To do this, the foundation had to be expanded with a lot of steel. With a large media presence, the church tower was finally delivered on two flatbed trucks on January 28, 1987.

The tower should now remind of the past of the Ruhr area and the rooster symbolizes the vigilance and our possible infidelity ( Peter ).

Altfrid Cross

With a height of 2.7 meters and a value of 3,850 DM at the time, a cross made of red sandstone now stands next to the main entrance of the church. The Altfrid-A and the text “Erected in the year of St. Altfrid 874-1974. Holy Altfrid, pray for us. ” . A Germanic plug-in cross, as it was drawn on the grave slab of Bilo 11th century in the cloister of the Essen Minster , served as a draft . The Altfrid-A comes from Bishop Franz Cardinal Hengsbach , which he incorporated into the plan drawing.
