Andreas Church Rostock

The St. Andreas Church in the Reutershagen district of Rostock is a church belonging to the Luther-St.-Andreas parish in the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . It was built as a modern functional building in 1975 on the site of a makeshift predecessor building from the post-war period. After the merger of two communities, the Martin Luther House also belongs to the community .

history

Due to the rapid development of the armaments industry, especially the Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke and the associated increase in population, the first section of settlement in what is now Reutershagen took place in the 1930s. The Reutershagen housing estate, the composers' quarter and the Ostmarkviertel (later also called Wiener Viertel) were built until 1937. The church members belonged to the Holy Spirit congregation. Services took place in the Holy Spirit Church on Margaretenplatz. Other events were held in the parish rooms of the Holy Spirit Church or in a parish hall on Hundertmännerstrasse.

As the number of Christians in this district continued to grow, a Vl. Parish set up with its own pastor in the Holy Spirit Congregation. Until the Second World War , this parish had no rooms of its own. A room in the house at Bräsigplatz 2 was rented in which services, Christian teaching and confirmation classes were held.

After the war, church services and other events took place at Wiener Platz 2, later at No. 5. The Vl. The parish of the Holy Spirit parish became an independent parish of Rostock northwest. At the Schwanenteich, the parish leased around 5000 square meters of building land from the city in 1946, around the spot where the art gallery stands today. The duration of the lease was contractually agreed for ten years. The foundation stone for a barrack building was laid in November 1946.

In 1947 the parish of Rostock Northwest was renamed the Luther parish . The Luther congregation included Reutershagen, composers' quarter, Ostmarkviertel, Barnstorf, Bramow, Schutow and Marienehe. The barrack church was consecrated on October 12, 1947 and was named Luther Church . A bell tower was erected in 1950.

Martin Luther House

In 1954 the Luther congregation had to be divided into two congregations, as the population of the district had risen sharply with the construction of the residential buildings south of Hamburger Strasse (Reutershagen I). The new congregation was named St. Andreas congregation and shared the premises of the Luther Church. The Catholic St. Joseph Congregation was also a guest in the Luther Church. On May 27, 1956, the Luther Parish opened its parish hall in Robert-Schumann-Str. 25 inaugurate. It was named Martin Luther House . A new church building planned on the same property was never realized.

After the ten-year lease for the property on which the church stood had expired, a dispute arose between the city and the parish in 1958 over the extension of the contract. Presumably for political reasons, after long negotiations between the state superintendent, the leading clergyman of the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of Rostock and representatives of the city council, the city ordered the site to be cleared and the community given an ultimatum for the demolition. The church barracks should be relocated to the Krischanweg in a not such exposed location. An official announcement from June 1958 in the press caused great resentment in the parish , in which it was stated that "... by mutual agreement ..." the relocation "... in the interest of the entire population of the city ... “ Will take place. The state superintendent of the Rostock church district contradicted and protested energetically but in vain. On June 16, 1958, the church was demolished and rebuilt in Krischanweg and consecrated on December 20, 1958. St. Andrew's Church was used by both parishes and, until 1963, also by the Catholic community. In 1962 a semi-detached house with apartments for church employees was built and moved into.

The makeshift building of the Andreas Church had become so dilapidated by 1975 that it had to be demolished at the end of the year. The new building was made possible by the special building program of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR , in which the construction work had to be paid for in currency (DM). On May 8, 1977, the community center with the old name St. Andrew's Church was inaugurated. In addition to a church hall, there was also a staff apartment, communal rooms, classrooms, kitchen and office rooms. The steel bell tower was built in 1981.

Due to the greatly reduced number of Christians in the congregation, both Reutershäger congregations were merged in 1997, the Luther congregation and St. Andreas congregation merged to form the Luther St. Andreas congregation .
