The Holy Spirit Church is a neo-Gothic church building in Rostock . It was built in 1905–1908 on the corner of Margaretenstrasse and Borwinstrasse in the Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt and is used by the Evangelical Lutheran Holy Spirit Congregation , which belongs to the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

history

With the structural expansion of the city towards the west at the end of the 19th century, the population increased in these suburbs in particular. Since the Jakobikirche was regularly hopelessly overcrowded, it was necessary to build a church. After long, grueling negotiations between the Mecklenburg regional church and the Rostock councilors, who had patronage duties here , the boundaries of the parishes in Rostock were only adapted to the population development in 1905, thus enabling the establishment of a new parish. The church was the first church to be built since the Middle Ages at the city's expense and was designed by the renowned architect Johannes Vollmer in a neo-Gothic style with 1,000 seats. The church was named after its location on the Heiligengeistfeld, which previously belonged to the Heiligengeist Hospital. Construction began on the new building, which cost 439,000 marks , in August 1905 and was consecrated on April 26, 1908. The church is laid out as a cross in its floor plan and its tower is 70 meters high. The brick walls with glazed stones as decorative elements stand on the foundations of Swedish granite .

today

Today the community of the Holy Spirit Church with over 2,250 members is one of the most important communities in Mecklenburg, especially since there are many young people and students among them. In addition to the church services, the church is also used for concerts of various musical styles. For parish work, an approx. 70 m² parish room was created under the north gallery in 2014 with a glass front that can be opened to the church room.
