The St. Anna Chapel in Weiler , a district of the large district town of Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , dates back to the castle chapel of Steinsberg Castle , first mentioned in 1515 . The eponymous Steinsberg , on which the castle and the chapel are located, is the highest point in the Kraichgau , making the chapel the highest church building in this natural area.

history

The castle chapel of Steinsberg Castle, built around 1500, is said to have fallen victim to a lightning strike in the 17th century; in any case, it fell into disrepair afterwards. The local Catholic community, which had shared the local church until then , renewed the chapel around 1750 and used it for church services from then on. Since the chapel is located outside the village, halfway up the Steinsberg , consideration was given to building a Catholic church in the village as early as the beginning of the 19th century. However, construction of the Holy Family Church did not begin until 1908. The Anna Chapel was damaged by lightning in 1933 and extensively renovated from 1946 to 1952. Another renovation took place in 1990. The chapel has a baroque altar and a baroque pulpit. Hermits lived there until 1811 in a hermitage that was demolished in 1832.

Bells

The oldest known bell for the Anna Chapel was cast by Johann Paulus Strobel in Speyer in 1760 . It had a diameter of 48 cm and was inscribed in Latin. In 1838 another bronze bell with a diameter of 40 cm was added. Both bells had to be handed in for armaments purposes during the First World War in 1917. In 1928 the chapel received a bell that had previously been in the tower of the Catholic Church of the Holy Family since 1922 to complement the chiming of the clock. This bell with the strike tone h '', a diameter of 46.5 cm and a weight of 52.5 kg had to be delivered in 1942 during World War II . In 1958 the chapel was finally given its present bronze bell, cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in Heidelberg. It has the strike note a '', a diameter of 52.4 cm and a weight of 100 kg. Their inscription reads: HELLO HOLY MOTHER ANNA, HONOR TO ALL WOMEN, CATHOLIC CHURCH WEILER NEAR SINSHEIM AD 1958.
