The Evangelical Lutheran St. Anne's Church in the west part of Dörverden stands on the left bank of the Aller on the site of a former knight's castle, of which no remains have otherwise been preserved. The brick church is composed of parts from the Romanesque , the Gothic and the late 18th century.

History and building history

Ship and choir from the southwest

The castle was used to collect taxes from shipping on the Aller.

After the Lords of the West died out , the Verden bishop Iso von Wölpe acquired their seat on the banks of the Aller in 1219 and then had the round watchtower built, which today serves as a church tower. A small nave was added in the 13th century. On the north side next to the tower, a later walled-up portal of the Romanesque church has been preserved. In the course of the 14th century, the nave was redesigned Gothic, but apart from the south portal, it received no pointed arches, but rather stitch arches .

The wider polygonal choir was not added until 1780-1786. In doing so, the church hall was given an undivided arched vault.

Details of the structure

Tower from the southeast

The upper floor of the tower has three arched biforias , of which the southern one has been renewed. From a technical point of view, however, the windows are not closed with arches, but with architraves , as the round arches were carved out of the undersides of large sandstone blocks.

With the windows of the church it is noticeable that the at least gothic walled-in middle window on the south wall of the nave, two later enlarged windows of this wall and the windows of the modern choir have arches of the same construction. The arch of the enlarged window in the north nave wall, which is only half a stone thick, has parallels in other Gothic window enlargements in the lower Weser region.

The galleries on both side walls of the ship were added in several construction phases.
