The St. Barbara Church is a small Romanesque basilica and the local church of Heringhausen , on the Diemelsee , in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district ( Hesse ).

History and design

The three-aisled church was built around 1100 as a small Romanesque basilica . The three parts of the room, tower, central nave and choir are staggered in height and clearly separated from each other. With its capitals and pillars, it looks rough and rough. The central nave and choir have slated gable roofs, the side aisles are equipped with pent roofs. Similarities with the architectural style of the Berndorfer Church and the Flechtdorfer Klosterkirche can be seen in the bell storey, in the arched sound openings designed as biforias with central columns. The oldest bell dates from 1674. The church has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the years. In the 19th century the windows were enlarged to get more light. The north aisle was rebuilt after a lightning strike in the tower. The mighty tower with a pyramid helmet towers over the ships. The construction of the vaults is burr-free and irregular. During the Thirty Years' War the church was damaged by an interior fire. During this time the population of Heringhausen was decimated to the pastor and two residents.

Originally the church was built for the entire parish, only in 1537 Heringhausen came to Waldeck . This explains why there were more places than inhabitants in the church.

Furnishing

Crucifix, probably from the old high altar
  • The original high altar was replaced in 1969 as part of a renovation by an altar made of Adorf shell limestone.
  • The pulpit and the font are also made of Adorf shell limestone.
  • Saint Barbara is a work of art from southern Germany, the sculpture was made around 1500. As is usual with depictions of these saints, a tower is included.
  • The crucifix probably comes from the old high altar.
  • Further relics of the old high altar are the three wooden panel pictures that were made between 1690 and 1700 and are now on display in the central and side aisles.
  • A memorial to the reformer Daniel Dillen can be seen in the back of the right aisle. Dillen was a pastor in Heringhausen from 1550 to 1601. On this memorial you can read Herdinghausen = military court .
  • The oldest bell dates from 1674, on this the place is called Heerthinghausen.
  • An early copy of a Last Supper painting by Peter Paul Rubens from 1632 hangs in the choir room. The painting was originally made for the sacramental altar of the church in Mechelen.
