Protestant church

The Protestant parish church is a listed church building in Berndorf , a district of the municipality of Twist Valley in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district ( Hesse ).

History and architecture

The cross-vaulted , Romanesque pillar basilica of the bound system with two double bays and a square choir was built in the twelfth century. It stands on a hill on the northern edge of Bendorf. At the same time, the slightly transverse rectangular west tower was built. The tower originally did not have an entrance at ground level. The former access to the tower and the weir system can still be seen on the top floor. The loopholes were later walled up. Central nave, tower and choir have the same width. The aisles are dominated by the central nave. The cross vaults are supported by strong columns and sturdy pillars. The windows and sound openings are arched. The tower portal of the former fortified church was installed in 1756. The superstructure of the tower with stepped gable and roof turret , like the closing walls of the side aisles , is modern. The barrel vaults in the aisles rest on low, massive pillars. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1849. Until then, the church also had a northern entrance. This disappeared with the almost complete renovation of the north side. In addition, four buttresses were erected to prevent the foundation walls from deviating.

Furnishing

  • The altar that Heinrich Erland made in 1667 was destroyed. The pulpit created by Josias Wolrat Brützel in 1709 was torn down. A wooden relief from the 1st quarter of the 16th century depicting the beheading of John or Paul was eaten by the wood worm; it is now in the Wolfgang Bonhage Museum in Korbach.
  • The font with tablets from 1579 dates from the second half of the 17th century.
