location

It is located in the Riga district of Vidzemes priekšpilsēta as an island on the intersection of Ģertrūdes iela and Baznīcas iela; the address is Ģertrūdes iela 8.

Equipment and history

The first documentary mention of a church at this location is from 1413. Located in the immediate vicinity of the main arterial road from Riga in a north-easterly direction, Saint Gertrude was venerated here as the patron saint of travelers and hikers. The church was rebuilt in 1589, but already in 1605 during the siege of Riga by the Swedish King Charles IX. destroyed. A temporary structure built in 1743 was replaced by a new church in 1781, which, however , went up in flames in 1812 due to the alleged threat of an attack by Napoleon Bonaparte, together with all of the Riga suburbs. After a provisional new building was erected again in 1814, the brick church in neo-Gothic style, which still exists today, was finally built from 1865 to 1869 . Contrary to the usual east-west orientation of church buildings, the St. Gertrud Church is oriented to the southeast, so that its striking tower dominates the several kilometers long line of sight of the Ģertrūdes iela.

Since October 29, 1998 the Ģertrūdes baznīca is registered under the number 6653 in the Latvian register of monuments.
