The St. Jakobi Church in Küps

The Jakobikirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Küps in the Evangelical Lutheran Dean's Office Kronach-Ludwigsstadt in northern Bavaria .

history

The St. Jakobi Church was founded by the imperial baron Hermann von Redwitz zu Küps and his son Johannes , following an entry in the parish register . There it says: “Fundatores huius ecclesiae fuerunt Nobiles de progenie Kueps unus nomine Herrmanus miles et filius suus nomine Johannes. Anno 1302 “(The founders of this church were the nobleman of the Küps lordship named Ritter Herrmann and his son named Johannes. In 1302).

From this first church only a few foundation walls in the tower area have been preserved. Time and again, fires and armed destruction forced the church to be rebuilt and renewed.

In 1533, the church had to be rebuilt after a severe fire that ravaged the place. In 1551 it received a second bell, which was repaired in 1735 and 1769. 20 years after the fire, in 1553, the church was again badly damaged in the war against the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg by Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades von Bayreuth. When it was rebuilt in 1558, it received a third bell and a clock.

The oldest dates on the church are on the west gable (1599) and on the renaissance portal (1611). During the Thirty Years' War , the parish and church were seriously damaged, for example in 1632 by a severe church fire. A communion chalice from 1649 has been preserved.

With the reconstruction in 1662 the church received its inner and outer appearance in the margrave baroque . Inside there is a painted coffered ceiling with 180 colorful fields from 1662 and a picture Bible on the gallery with 40 panels. The font dates from 1693, the altar from 1898 and the baroque organ from 1725. Until 1776, the deceased were buried in the area around the church. Then circumstances forced a new cemetery to be built. In 1898 the church was renovated and completely redesigned: the nave was lengthened, the neo-Gothic choir was added, the west side received an extension with a rose window, for the staircase to the gallery and organ and a stair tower was added to the north side.

Further major renovations to preserve the building fabric followed in 1970–1975 and in 2000.

Patronage

Since the end of the 11th century, the lords of Redwitz were landlords and feudal people in this area. They also enjoyed a reputation beyond that, as attested by a document from 1151 in which Küps was first mentioned. The Küpser St. Jakobi Church was founded around 150 years later.

In 1302 Hermann and Johannes von Redwitz zu Küps had a church built on the rock above the old aristocratic seat. As founders and donors of the church, they and their noble family took on the obligation to maintain the church and to guarantee all the necessary services. In return, they were given the right to decide on the appointment of the local pastor and a special seat in the church. The church also served them as a burial place, which is confirmed by numerous grave slabs and a death shield inside the church.
