St. John's Chapel (Stadthagen)
The St. Johannis Chapel is the oldest preserved architectural monument in the city of Stadthagen .
History and architecture
Probably together with the Johannishof leper home to the north , which is only documented in 1394 , the St. John's Chapel was built in 1312 outside the walled city - about 250 meters from the Niederntor . It is a rectangular Gothic Crushed stone - church hall with gable roof . The window slits, so-called hagioscopes (leprosy slits ), on the north side were intended for lepers so that they could see the altar and the host during mass .
The leper home was converted into a poor house around 1500 . The current building dates from the 17th century. It was renovated in the 1970s and converted into a studio and residential building.
During the period of inflation , the St. John's Chapel was used as a mortuary . It has been owned by the St. Martini Congregation since 1979 and is used for end-of-week devotions.
