The St. Casimir Church ( Lithuanian Šv. Kazimiero bažnyčia ) is a Catholic church in Alytus , Lithuania . It is located on the road between the Valkininkai train station and Alytus and belongs to the Vilkaviškis diocese .

history

In 1670 a wooden church was built at the current location, which existed until 1703.

In 1891 an Orthodox church was built on the site , which belonged to the Alytus fortress . The richly ornamented building in the eclectic style had three aisles with a tower. After the First World War it was given to the Lithuanian Catholic Church . The war damage was repaired. It was then consecrated to St. Casimir and served as a garrison church for the soldiers billeted in the city.

It was closed after the Second World War . In the Soviet era , the church was used as a salt store, later as a car workshop. In 1990 the believers of the Lithuanian Catholic Church got them back. Nothing has been preserved from the original architecture and furnishings. The postmodern facade with the tower shaft, which is surmounted by an imagined cross, is reminiscent of the former shape.
