The Protestant St. Margarethen Church in Aschersleben is a small Romanesque church building.

Like the St. Stephen's Church and St. Johannis Church, it belongs to the parish of Aschersleben.

Location and description

The church is located on an important hill in the Aschersleber Neustadt. It was built around 1100 and first mentioned in a document in 1303. The church is a single-nave structure vaulted with a flat round wooden ceiling with a straight choir closure and a built-in tower in the northwest corner. The small tower is said to come from the previous Romanesque building. In 1410 it was cremated in a fire and remained in ruins until it was rebuilt in 1586. The Church suffered greatly in the Thirty Years War . In 1636 it was looted and around 1640 imperial troops burned the sexton's house. In 1642 an imperial lieutenant colonel and in 1644 a count Königsmark were buried in the church. In 1715 the church had to be rebuilt and was completed in 1717. It has been preserved in this condition to this day.

Furnishing

The altar and the pulpit form a unit, with the pulpit above the altar. The font dates from 1587 and has probably never gone mad. There is also a large crucifix and some paintings in the church. The Margarethenkirche has 3 bells to ring.

Specialty

On its south side there is a sundial , dated from 1567.
