The Romanesque St. Nicolai Church in the Barby district of Tornitz is the oldest church in the Elbe-Saale-Winkel. It belongs to the parish area Barby in the parish of leeches of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

description

The oldest part of the church is its tower, which is characteristic of a Romanesque building with its thick quarry stone walls, the saddle roof and the small, narrow windows. The originally attached nave of the same width was widened to the north in the 19th century so that the tower was no longer in the middle of the building axis. The tower and nave are provided with a tiled gable roof, and elongated arched windows are let into the south and east facades. Traces of the former portal can be seen on the southern wall.

The interior of the nave is closed off by a flat wooden beam ceiling, which is supported by a slender central support. The original painting is still partially there.

In the 1970s, the interior of the church was completely redesigned. The two-story side galleries were demolished, only the west gallery remained. It is clad with a window wall and carries a no longer functional organ from the Rühlmann workshop . The altar and baptismal font date from the time of the renovation, whereby the altar was placed atypically on the north wall. Accordingly, the pews are also facing north.

From the original furnishings, a remnant of the Romanesque baptismal font in the basement of the tower and the neo-Gothic altarpiece on the east wall remain. Only one bell has survived from the former bell of the tower.
