The St. Nikolai Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Rinteln .

Building history

The St. Nikolai Church was initially built as a basilica from 1238 . In the 14th century it was converted into today's three-aisled hall church without a transept. The remarkable Romanesque south portal has been preserved from the early days of the church. From 1788 to 1803 the spire, which originally consisted of a gable roof with a high turret, was replaced by a baroque lantern.

Because of the frequent Weser floods, the floor of the church was partially given up in 1810. In 1885 the floor was raised further to a total of about 1.20 cm, the portals were raised accordingly, the nave windows were regotised and the current church stalls were installed.

Parish

The Counts of Schaumburg introduced the Reformation in Rinteln in 1559 . At the beginning of the 17th century, the Rinteln theology professor and superintendent of the county of Schaumburg, Josua Stegmann , worked at the St. Nikolai Church , whose tomb (in the tower room) and portrait are in the church. In 1646 Adolph Wilhelm Rottmann was Magister and Pastor secundarius in Rinteln, from 1658 pastor primarius . He died in 1689. From 1652 to 1689 Daniel Wilhelmi was a preacher. Wilhelmi was buried in the St. Nicolai Church behind the altar, where his successor's grave was later prepared.

Furnishing

Among the furnishings, a bronze baptismal font from 1582 in the choir is to be highlighted. Numerous epitaphs from citizens of Rinteln refer to its function as the township's civic church.

Organ prospectus from 1621

The organ prospectus from 1621 may have been made in part by Adolph Compenius . The instrument underwent major changes in the 18th and 20th centuries. In 1995 Rudolf Janke carried out an extension using older registers . Today the work has 39 registers on three manuals and pedal . Since November 2012, the historic organ has been equipped with a baroque Zimbelstern with three small bells. Outwardly recognizable by the two gold-plated stars.
