The St. Antonius Chapel near Hohentengen on the Upper Rhine is a building from the 16th century. It stands on the banks of the Rhine opposite the Swiss town of Kaiserstuhl above Rotwasserstelz Castle .

description

The chapel stands on the eaves side on the slope edge above the Rhine and was originally located at an important intersection. At its southeast corner an old ravine leads downhill. The approximately 8 meter long and 6.10 meter wide structure has a 3/8 apse with a hipped roof and a gable on the west side. The ogival entrance portal on this side of the chapel bears the engraved date of the year 1599. At the eastern end of the north and south walls, the chapel has two ogival tracery windows, in the east wall there is a slightly smaller window. A sundial is painted on the south-eastern side of the apse at the height of the windows. On the south wall, further remains of painting have been preserved on a strip about three and a half meters long under the roof overhang.

According to an information board attached to the building, the construction of the chapel, which presumably replaced or emerged from a previous building, goes back to a foundation of the patrician family Erzli from Kaiserstuhl. A cross next to the chapel, renewed in 2002 according to the old template, reminds of the hospital master Arbogast Walder from Kaiserstuhl.

The chapel, renovated in 1997, is one of the most beautiful in the Archdiocese of Freiburg , also because of its location .
