prehistory

The Opole Duke Nikolaus I and his wife had a monastery built for St. Bernard Minorites on a plot of land outside the city walls at the Beuthen Gate in 1473 with papal approval. A church was built in the same year and dedicated to Saint Barbara . The monastery was again demolished in 1516 at the request of Pope Leo X due to a dispute between the monastery and the lower monastery at that time , which the Franciscans lived in. However, the church was preserved. In 1603 the church was reported to be in desolate condition, but no further renovation work was carried out. In 1643 the church visit report of the principalities of Opole and Ratibor reported about the damage to the church by the enemy.

Today's church building

The church was rebuilt in 1678 and has been preserved to this day. There was a vegetable garden around the Schrotholzkirche , some of which was also used as a cemetery over the years.

During the secularization of 1811 there was an inventory of the church. Inside it had three altars, a pulpit, a bell in the tower and an image of Saint Barbara and the builder Adam Anet. As the church was again in poor condition and the city of Opole did not want to pay for the renovation work, it was initially decided to demolish it. In 1811, however, the Kollanowitz community purchased the church for 33 thalers, thus saving the church from demolition. In the summer of the same year, the scrap wood church was dismantled and initially stored. Delays in dismantling and delivery meant that some beams were used for other purposes, which then had to be replaced during the reconstruction. In 1812 the church was built south of the town center at the cemetery at today's Ulica Szkolna and was ceremoniously consecrated on December 19, 1812.

The church has been a listed building since April 1, 1964. In 1978 the church received a new steeple. In 1989 the roof and the fence were renewed. Today the church belongs to the parish of Osowiec - Wengern ( Polish Parafia Węgry-Osowiec ).
