The church of St. Barbara in Lichtentanne in Saxony was built around 1150 and rebuilt in its present form in 1628. It has a northeast orientation. The church was the only church in the village until the beginning of the 20th century and was replaced by the larger Christ Church in 1908 . Afterwards, still used for various events of the parish, the church fell into disrepair from the late 1960s, before it was secured and renovated from 1996 and has served as an event room since 2001.

In 1609 the church got a convertible altar by Peter Breuer . In 1628 the church was so dilapidated that it was demolished and rebuilt. The altar was preserved. In 1629 the font was erected. In 1650 the roof was repaired. The tower was erected in 1690 and two bells were installed in 1756. In 1831 a school (cantor's council) was built below the church . At the turn of the 20th century, St. Barbara's Church became too small for the location. The population rose to around 4,500 due to the settlement of the Maxhütte on Reichenbacher Strasse and the establishment of the worsted yarn spinning mill by Carl Otto Schmelzer.

In 1907 the foundation stone was laid for the Christ Church , consecrated in 1908 . The Peter Breuer altar of the Church of St. Barbara was secured and is now in the Lichtentanne cemetery chapel. The application for termination made by the parish in 1910 was rejected by the state government.

In 1942 it was confiscated and used as a warehouse, in 1945 the Barbarakirche was plundered and the like. a. the baptismal font and valuable wooden figures disappeared.

Until the end of the 1960s, parish events took place in the old church, after which the building fell into disrepair. In 1991 there was an arson attack. The ceiling was badly damaged. In 1994 the state of construction was described as desolate, water penetrating through the leaky roof had already damaged all wooden components. In 1996, thanks to a donation, work on the emergency security and later on the renovation of the church could begin. The Church of St. Barbara has been used as an event room since 2001. In 2012 the electrical system was extensively upgraded and a kitchen was installed.

The Barbarakirche is a simple hall building without a choir in the style of the rural early baroque. The simple plaster facade is structured by buttresses. The hipped roof is crowned by a slated hexagonal roof turret with an onion helmet. The side vestibule is partially designed in half-timbered construction.
