St. Elisabeth Church

The Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth , also known as Elisabeth Church, is located on Vinzenzplatz in the center of Düsseldorf and is dedicated to St. Elisabeth of Thuringia . It is the only church in the city built into a row of houses and has been a listed building since 1983 .

building

St. Elisabeth is a three - aisled neo - Romanesque parish church with two towers and a wide entrance front. It was built between 1908 and 1910 according to a design by the Düsseldorf architect Josef Kleesattel ; the Elisabeth Chapel was created by Gisbert Dahmen-Wassenberg.

The Elizabeth Church was originally planned as a free-standing church. However, since the property was very close to the lower-lying railway tracks, there were great doubts about building a church there. Part of this building area was therefore sold again. When the decision to build a church was finally made, there was no longer enough space for a free-standing church. The Elisabeth Church was added to the front of the house.

It was severely damaged in the Second World War, but it was repaired by community members after the war. The apse, however, was not reconstructed until 1994 , at this point only a simple wall had been built up as a temporary room closure.

local community

Today's parish of St. Elisabeth and St. Vinzenz was created in 2000 through the merger of the parishes of St. Elisabeth and St. Vinzens . The parish church of the latter parish was the Vinzenskirche located on Höherweg and was sold in 2001 to the Free Church New Life Fellowship . The parish is now part of the Flingern / Düsseltal parish association.
