St. Franziskus is a former Roman Catholic church in Wesel on the Lower Rhine. The church building, completed in 1959, is located in the Schepersfeld district . A columbarium has been located in the church building since March 2020 .

location

The church building of St. Franziskus is in the north of the district of Schepersfeld, which borders the Wesel city center to the east. The church is located in the middle of a residential area on the streets Am Birkenfeld and Franziskusstraße . A kindergarten and a multi-generation house are in the immediate vicinity. East of these facilities runs with the Schepersweg, the central axis of the district.

history

Since the Wesel city center was badly destroyed in World War II , many of its citizens sought refuge in Schepersfeld in 1945. The cathedral capitular Josef Janßen let masses take place in a school building on Blücherstraße from 1945. The school kept this function as an emergency church until the completion of the inner-city Martini church in 1949. After the foundation of a church building association in 1956, construction of the Franziskuskirche began on October 6, 1957 in Schepersfeld. On October 4, 1959, Heinrich Baaken consecrated the completed church.

In 1961 the church forecourt was completed, and in the same year the addition of a sacristy began . After five years of belonging to St. Martini, St. Francis achieved the status of an independent parish in 1964. Adjacent to the church, the kindergarten was opened in 1972 and a mother-child home, today's multi-generation house, in 1976. In 2006 the parish lost its independence when it merged with the Churches of St. Antonius and the Church of Peace to the Holy Angels to form the new parish of St. Anthony . In May 2013 this became part of the new Wesel parish St. Nikolaus , whose parish office is located at the church of St. Martini.

The last service took place in the church on July 22, 2018. It was then converted into a columbarium , which opened in March 2020.
