St. Gereon (Monheim)
St. Gereon is the Roman Catholic parish church of Monheim am Rhein ( Mettmann district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
Today's parish church emerged from a separate church of the Cologne Gereonsstift , which was incorporated into it in 1223. The Romanesque tower of this church has been preserved, the core of which was built around 1300. The old church itself was a three-aisled pillar basilica from the end of the 11th century with the west tower added later. The dilapidated northern aisle was demolished in 1817 and re-listed in 1818, as was the southern half in 1825. At the same time, the entire eastern section was re-listed. This largely reconstructed Romanesque church was destroyed in the Second World War except for the tower and was replaced by a two-aisled brick building from 1951 to 1953. The tower, the Romanesque still in the bell storey Lisenengliederung received and pointed arches on the second floor dazzling displays of a restoration in the 19th century, was to secure retracted concrete ceilings. The slated pyramid roof was put on in 1988.
