The Pekkala cabinet was the 31st government cabinet in the history of Finland . It was in office from March 26, 1946 to July 29, 1948 (857 days).
The People's Democrat Mauno Pekkala , formerly a Social Democrat and Minister of State under his predecessor Juho Kusti Paasikivi , formed a People's Front Government with a majority consisting of People's and Social Democrats, the Landbund and the Swedish People's Party.
During Pekkala’s reign, left’s influence in Finland peaked and concerns about an impending Soviet-backed coup grew. With the post of Interior Ministry, which was initially taken over by the communist Yrjö Leino , who was married to the well-known communist minister Hertta Kuusinen , the Finnish secret police Valpo came under the control of the communists.
Through a strategically wise contract policy between the Finnish bourgeoisie and the Soviet Union, the influence of the communists was finally reduced without causing a provocation in Moscow, and in the summer of 1948 the only Finnish government led by People's Democrats came to an end.
