Cabinet ahoy
The Aho cabinet was the 65th cabinet in Finnish history . It was sworn in on April 26, 1991 and held office until April 13, 1995. Participating parties were the Center Party (KESK), the National Collection Party ( KOK), the Swedish People's Party (RKP) and the Christian Federation (SKL).
In the parliamentary elections in 1991 , Prime Minister Holkeri's conservative rallying party and the co-ruling Social Democrats (SDP) lost votes and the Center Party became the strongest party. Thereupon the chairman of the Center Party entrusted with the formation of the government, Esko Aho , formed a bourgeois coalition government to which the Christian Federation also belonged in addition to the gathering party and the Swedish People's Party already involved in the previous government. On June 15, 1994, the SKL, which was against joining the European Union, left the government. In the 1995 general election , the Center Party lost 15 of its 55 seats and a new government led by the Social Democrats was formed.
Foreign policy
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Finnish foreign policy was reoriented. The Finnish-Soviet Aid Pact concluded in 1948 was dissolved in 1992 and replaced by a friendship pact.
After the EFTA members Austria and Sweden applied to join the EEC , in March 1992 the Finnish government, with the consent of parliament, declared its readiness to enter into accession negotiations with the EEC. After negotiations were over, a referendum was held on October 16, 1994 , with 57% in favor of membership. The accession was completed on January 1, 1995.
Domestic politics
The Aho cabinet's reign was marked by a severe economic crisis. The government responded with spending cuts, especially in the social and health sectors. The Finnish central bank ended the peg of Finnmark to the EMS in September 1992 , which led to a sharp devaluation of the Finnish currency. In 1991 and 1992 GDP contracted by 7.1 and 4% respectively, and unemployment rose to 20.1% in July 1993. The government introduced doctor and school fees and increased taxes on gasoline. For people with an annual income of over 100,000 Finnmark, a compulsory non-interest loan was introduced.
