Cabinet Fagerholm III
The Fagerholm III cabinet was the 44th government cabinet in the history of the Republic of Finland . It was in office from August 29, 1958 to January 13, 1959 (138 days). It initially consisted of 15 ministers in 17 different departments.
The Social Democrat Karl-August Fagerholm led a majority government made up of the Social Democrats, the Landbund, the Conservative Collection Party, the People's Party and the Swedish People's Party. Only the People's Democrats and a split from the Social Democratic Party were not involved in the government. It was the first government after the parliamentary elections of July 1958 in which the left-wing People's Democrats replaced the Social Democrats as the strongest force and just before them and the Landbund the strongest parliamentary group. After the elections, President Urho Kekkonen left the People's Democrats in charge of forming a government and commissioned Fagerholm instead.
The end of the government was already in sight in December 1958, when the cabinet members of the Landbund announced their resignation in protest against Fagerholm's predominantly pro-Western foreign policy, which had led to economic sanctions from the Soviet Union.
Fagerholm's successor was the Landbund politician Vieno Sukselainen , who until the summer of 1961 headed a government made up of the Landbund and the Swedish People's Party.
