Toimi Olavi Kankaanniemi (born February 26, 1950 in Tyrvää ) is a politician of the Finnish Christian Democrats (KD) .

Studies and professional career

Kankaanniemi first completed a degree in social sciences , which he graduated with a diploma in 1971. This was followed by a degree in local government at the University of Tampere , which he also completed in 1975 with a diploma. Afterwards he was first community secretary and acting mayor of the community Siikainen . From 1976 to 1987 he was then community secretary and temporarily deputy community director of the community Uurainen .

Political career

Kankaanniemi began his political career on March 21, 1987 when he was elected a member of the Reichstag . Since then he has represented the interests of the Finnish Christian Democrats (KD) in the electoral district of Central Finland . In the current Reichstag he is a member of the trade committee and a deputy member of the transport and communications and agriculture and forestry committees.

From 1989 to 1995 he was party leader of the KD. During the KD's (so far only) participation in a government, he was Deputy Foreign Minister and Deputy Social and Health Minister in Esko Aho's cabinet from April 26, 1991 to June 28, 1994 . When he became parliamentary group leader in the Reichstag in 1995, he left Bjarne Kallis to chair the party. However, he only held the office for one year.

In 2011, Kankaanniemi resigned from the Reichstag.
