Yrjö Henrik Kallinen (born June 15, 1886 in Oulu ; † January 1, 1976 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish politician of the Social Democratic Party of Finland ( Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue ), who, among other things, was a member of parliament for several years ( Eduskunta ) and temporarily Minister of State and Minister of Defense was.

Life

After attending elementary school, Kallinen worked in various professions between 1899 and 1905, before he worked as a switchman and brakeman for the railway in Oulu from 1905 to 1918 . After the end of the First World War , the Social Democrat was in prison for political reasons and after his release worked as a machinist in Lahti before he became a lecturer in the Confederation of Consumer Cooperatives ( Kulutusosuuskuntien Keskusliitto ) in 1924 . His last position was between 1927 and 1955 as the educational director of the institution.

At the end of the Second World War , Kallinen was elected to the parliament ( Eduskunta ) in the elections in March 1945 , in which he represented the constituency of Turku-North between April 6, 1945 and July 21, 1948 . At the beginning of his membership in parliament he was chairman of the parliamentary group and a member of the constitutional committee.

On March 26, 1946, Kallinen was appointed by Prime Minister Mauno Pekkala as Minister of State to Minister in the Prime Minister's Office in his government and at the same time took over the office of Defense Minister from Pekkala. While he held the post of Defense Minister until the end of Pekkala’s tenure on July 29, 1948, Hertta Kuusinen succeeded him as Minister of State on June 4, 1948.
