St. Jakob in Kastelaz

St. Jakob in Kastelaz is a church on the Kastelaz hill above Tramin in South Tyrol ( Italy ), which is particularly known for its Romanesque frescoes.

history

St. Jacob was probably created in the 11th century when the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela had reached its peak. It was probably decorated with late Romanesque frescoes in the early 13th century. Around the same time, a castle that has now disappeared was built on the hilltop above the little church. Originally the Romanesque church consisted only of the rectangular nave and a round arch apse. The Gothic aisle in the south was added in 1440 and the sacristy was added on the north side around 1500.

Frescoes

St. Jakob contains one of the oldest fresco cycles in the German-speaking area.

Romanesque frescoes

Demon fresco

The Romanesque frescoes are in the apse and on the east wall of the apsidal hall. In the base zone of the apse there are beasts and menacing mythical creatures, above the twelve apostles assigned to one another in pairs, and above in the apse- calotte the Maiestas Domini (enthroned Christ surrounded by the four evangelist symbols ) in connection with the Deësis . In the base of the triumphal arch there is an atlas on the left and right , as well as, at the level of the apostles, a bird woman and a goat fish . In the gusset , Cain and Abel are depicted making their sacrifices.

Gothic frescoes

Chicken legend ( Ambrosius Gander )

The side aisle is extremely colorful with Gothic frescoes by Ambrosius Gander . One fresco, for example, shows the so-called " chicken legend ".
