St. John the Baptist (Alkenrath)
The Church of St. John the Baptist is a Catholic church in the Leverkusen district of Alkenrath .
history
The foundation stone was laid on July 21, 1957. The architect was Fritz Schaller . The final completion of the church took until 1962, because due to the rapidly growing population, the church had to be expanded shortly after its inauguration.
The floor plan, which had been worked out in the form of a star, was expanded on two sides. The furnishing was done by the Cologne artist Egino Weinert , who also created the so-called "Weinert Gate", which forms the original end of the church to the market square. The ambo, the altar cross, the old lecture cross and the Way of the Cross were made by Weinert using cell enamel technology.
When the church was expanded, the altar and the organ had to swap places so that the altar does not face east as it was originally, but atypically faces west.
