St. Josef in Mosbach

St. Josef is a Catholic church in Mosbach in the Neckar-Odenwald district . It was built in 1957 in the north-west of the city for the Catholics who settled after the Second World War and in 1959 raised to the status of an independent parish .

history

Mosbach has been predominantly Protestant since the Reformation . The collegiate church of St. Juliana has been used as a simultaneous church for Protestants and Catholics since 1698 . In 1935 the Catholic parish church of St. Cäcilia was built south of the old town . For the Catholic refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War , living space was created in particular in the Hammerweg settlement in the north-west of Mosbach and in the building areas of Bauernbrunn and Im Masseldorn . They were also provided for by the parish in St. Cäcilia.

Since the walk to the Church of St. Cäcilia often took half an hour and more, a makeshift barrack church was set up on Hammerweg behind the Ehler bakery. The so-called "hammer barracks" with 150 seats turned out to be too small. In the 1950s, the Catholic community under "Baudekan" Josef Krämer tried several times without success to acquire building land for a new church in the new housing estates, including in Katzenhorn, Elzgrund, Nüstenbacher Straße and the current location of the church on Hammerweg. However, the negotiations failed due to plots that were too small, a lack of willingness to sell on the part of the owners, urban building projects or purchase conditions. When the planning began, they wanted to build not only a church, but also an associated community center and a rectory, so that a lot of space and consequently several parcels were required. The parish acquired land, but it was not suitable for the planned building project.

Through an exchange of land with the city of Mosbach and a local farmer, the parish finally came into possession of the building site on Hammerweg, where the laying of the foundation stone for the St. Josef Church was celebrated in April 1957. The church with sister house St. Pirmin with kindergarten and parish hall, sacristy and sister's apartment as well as rectory was built according to plans by the young architect Rolf Steinbach , a son of the Mosbach master builder Viktor Steinbach. The construction time was around half a year. Even during the construction period, services were regularly held in the shell of the crypt , often under the direction of the future Archbishop of Freiburg, Oskar Saier . The church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Hermann Schäufele on November 3, 1957. With the inauguration of the church, the use of the crypt for religious services ended for the time being. In March 1959 the church was raised to an independent parish. In the course of the expansion of the gallery in 1964, the services were temporarily moved back to the crypt, which was used for this purpose. a. received its own electronic organ, so that it has since been available as a second worship room.

description

The east-facing church has an almost rectangular floor plan with a slightly indented tower attached to the side. The single-nave church building, like the tower, is spanned by a gable roof and is illuminated by high-lying rows of windows on the side walls. An organ gallery has been drawn in on the western gable side. The church has 480 seats, the spacious crypt under the high altar can hold another 200 people.

The interior of the church is kept simple. Altars, pulpit, communion bench and floor plates are made of Franconian gold bench and blue bench marble. In place of the reredos there are wall paintings behind the high and St. Mary's altars. The painting of the church with murals behind the altars and in the baptistery and a station of the cross was done by the painter Benedikt Schaufelberger . The tabernacle for the main altar was created by the Freiburg metal sculptor Alfred Erhart , in the crypt there is a tabernacle from the Bessler company from Würzburg. The church has a relic of St. Kosmas , which she received in 1960 from the Freiburg reliquary. In 1963, the parish also acquired an old saint figure of St. Anthony of Padua, which she had restored in 1966.

The organ of the church was made by Max Bader, owner Vleugels-Mund , in Hardheim.
