St. Josef Hospital Essen-Werden

The St. Josef Hospital Essen-Werden is a company of the Essen University Medical Center and an academic teaching hospital of the Duisburg-Essen University. It is located in the center of the Werden district of Essen .

history

In the formerly independent abbey town of Werden, the poor and the sick were cared for by the monasteries and hospices until the middle of the 19th century. In 1854 the parish of St. Ludgerus took the initiative to set up a hospital in Werden. The Ferberschen Gasthof opposite the Feintuchwerke was acquired for this. 1857 years later, the Catholic hospital on Propsteistraße was inaugurated and operations began with four nuns. Growing requirements made expansions and modernizations necessary at an early stage. In 1915 the hospital had 120 beds after it was largely rebuilt.

During World War II , the hospital was badly damaged by an air mine impact . After the end of the war, the damage was repaired with the help of the Werden population. At the beginning of the 1960s, further expansion and differentiation into new departments began, so that in 1990 a modern hospital with 200 beds could be built.

A cooperation between the Catholic and Protestant hospitals , which opened in 1887, began in 1892 when the Protestant house offered the Catholic one to disinfect equipment and laundry. At the end of the 1960s it was decided to cooperate more closely. In 1968/69 joint anesthesia was set up. In the 1970s, the radiology and clinical laboratory were shared . In September 1998 a joint cooperation agreement was signed. From this point on, the two houses had a common name in addition to their original name: Kliniken Essen Süd.

Together they now counted twelve clinics with 486 beds and a joint operating center, which was inaugurated in 2009. In 2012 the cooperation agreement was canceled and the evangelical hospital was transferred to the sponsorship of the Essen church district. On July 1, 2013, the University Hospital Essen acquired all of the shares in the Catholic parish of St. Ludgerus.

The St. Josef Hospital Essen-Werden is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Essen University Hospital with around 400 employees and 167 beds. The Clinic for General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery, the Clinic for General Internal Medicine and the Center for Clinical Radiology are integrated into the West German Tumor Center (WTZ). The St. Josef Hospital has been an academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2011.

The St. Josef Hospital is fully certified according to ISO 9001: 2015. With a recommendation rate of 88 percent, the hospital is one of the front runners nationwide. This is shown by the publications of the independent Internet portal Weisse Liste , which was set up jointly by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the umbrella organizations of the largest patient and consumer organizations.

education

In the practical year , the last module for a medical license , after the theoretical years of study at the university, the focus is on patient training. Under the guidance, supervision and responsibility of the training doctor, the students in the St. Josef Hospital in Essen-Werden are introduced to the requirements of the practice. In three phases of 16 weeks each, they go through surgery and internal medicine as compulsory subjects as well as an additional clinical department corresponding to their elective. At the end of the practical year, the students take their state examination, and the senior doctors of the St. Josef Hospital are included in the oral part of the examination.

In order to ensure the training of nurses in the south of Essen, the St. Josef Hospital, together with the Evangelical Hospital Essen-Werden, the Alfried Krupp Hospital Steele (formerly Lutherhaus) and the Ruhrlandklinik in Heidhausen, supports the nursing school on the Ruhr.
