St. Joseph Cathedral

The St. Joseph Cathedral in San Diego in San Diego County in California , United States , is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego . It bears the patronage of Saint Joseph and is located in downtown San Diego .

history

The church was consecrated in 1875 by the Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles , Francisco Mora y Borrell .

When the Diocese of San Diego was created in 1936 from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Los Angeles-San Diego, the building was raised to the cathedral of the new diocese. In order to do justice to the rapid growth in San Diego, the previous building was soon replaced by the current cathedral. The number of seats in the church was doubled. The new St. Joseph Cathedral was consecrated on January 26, 1941 by San Diego's first bishop Charles Francis Buddy , who had previously been a priest of the parish himself.

By 2011, the cathedral had been renovated for $ 770,000. Layers of concrete and wood on the outside and the bell tower were restored, the interior lighting was improved, and repairs and touch-ups were made to the paintings and the upper cladding.
