from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Joseph Monastery (German: St. Josephskloster) was an American Benedictine monastery in St. Marys in Pennsylvania .

history

The monastery was founded in 1852 by mother Benedicta Riepp together with two companions from the Bavarian monastery of St. Walburg . They accepted Bonifaz Wimmer's invitation to take care of the German settlers in Pennsylvania.

From here further Benedictine monasteries were founded. The monastery of St. Joseph became the mother monastery of the Congregation of St. Scholastica (Federation of St. Scholastica).

In January 2014 it was announced that the 17 sisters had decided to dissolve the monastery. The sisters between the ages of 58 and 91 were distributed to other monasteries.
