St. Kilian in Herbolzheim

The Catholic Church of St. Kilian in Herbolzheim , a district of the Neudenau community in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1958/59. It replaced the old Kilian's Church , which had become too small, in the center of Herbolzheim.

history

Herbolzheim remained Catholic during the Reformation due to its former affiliation with Kurmainz . There were several historical churches at the site, documented or attested by excavation finds, which date back to the high Middle Ages, including the St. Wendelin Church in the cemetery on the Jagstufer opposite the site. The dilapidated Wendelinskirche was replaced in 1770 by a new church in the center of the village. The old Kilian church in the center of the village was the main church of the village until the middle of the 20th century. When numerous expellees, mainly from Hungary and the Sudetenland, came to Herbolzheim after the Second World War, the local Catholic community grew from around 650 to over 1100 people. The old Kilian's Church could no longer hold the large number of believers, so that in 1954 three plots of land near the old church were purchased for structural expansion and the collection of funds for the renovation began.

The expansion of the old Kilian's Church remained controversial for several years and eventually led to the resignation of the pastor's office by Pastor Hock, who had pushed the church expansion for a long time. Under his successor, Pastor Braun, the congregation finally acquired another piece of land in 1957 on the western bank of the Jagstufer, on which the groundbreaking ceremony for today's Kilian Church took place on March 28, 1958. On Whit Monday, May 26, 1958, the foundation stone was laid by the then Mosbach dean, Joseph Krämer. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 18, 1958. The church was consecrated on July 12, 1959. The old Kilian's Church was then used as the Bernhardusheim event building.
