The Church of St. Cyril and Method ( St. Anne's Church until 1945 ) is an Orthodox church in Wroclaw . It is located on the Wroclaw Sand Island .

history

The original St. Anne's Church was built between 1686 and 1690 for the Augustinians in the baroque style . In the Middle Ages, a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph stood on the property . This was destroyed at the beginning of the 17th century.

After secularization in 1810, the church came to the Catholic teachers' college. Between 1919 and 1921 the church served the town's Polish minority as a Catholic place of worship. Later the St. Anna Church went to the Old Catholic Church .

During the Second World War , almost half a million books from the Wroclaw University Library were stored in the church. During the battle for Breslau , the church was badly damaged and burned down completely along with the books. After the war, small security measures were initially carried out.

In 1970 the building went to the city's Orthodox community. It was rebuilt and could be used again in 1976 as the first Orthodox church.

architecture

The church is one of the first baroque churches in the city. It was richly decorated with baroque ornaments and a baroque gable. The church Il Gesù in Rome served as a model for the construction . Today the church contains many icon images of the Greek Orthodox Church.
