St. Laurentius (Cologne-Ensen)
The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is a neo-Gothic church in the Cologne-Ensen district that was built between 1894 and 1896 . It belongs to the parish association of the Porzer Rhine churches .
History and architecture
The parish church of St. Laurentius is a neo-Gothic, three-aisled stepped hall. The choir has moved in and the church is covered by a gable roof with transverse gables and ridge turrets. The 56 meter high square tower has several corner towers and an octagonal helmet. It was built according to plans by the architect Theodor Kremer . During the Second World War, it was severely damaged by several bombs, only the outer walls remained. By 1951, the church was made so that services could be held again. The tower was renovated in 1965, the rest of the church in 1984/1985. Another complete renovation took place in 1999/2000, in which the interior was redesigned in color. The church windows come from designs by Paul Weigmann and the companies Franz Melchior (Cologne), Derix (Düsseldorf) and Hein Derix (Kevelaer) and were installed in two construction phases.
Furnishing
The original equipment was almost completely lost during the war. A new altar was added in 1965, the ambo in 1967 and the tabernacle in 1976 and the altar cross in 1979/80. These works of art were created by the sculptor Sepp Hürten . There are also figures of Laurentius and the Virgin Mary in the church . For some time now there has also been a figure of Christ at rest , the Savior with a crown of thorns and scourge wounds, but without the wounds of the nails of the cross and the stab of the lance (side wound).
The organ with a total of 21 stops on two manuals consists partly of the remains of the Seifert (Cologne) organ that was acquired in May 1909 and destroyed in the war.
Bells
The ringing consists of four bells that were cast in Gescher in 1957 by Hans Hüesker ( Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock ) . They hang on wooden yokes in the steel belfry; Bell 4 hangs on the straight steel yoke. The Angelus is rung with the Marienbell . At masses on weekdays the bells 4 + 3 + 2 ring, on Sundays and public holidays the full bell rings.
