St. Laurentius (Nienhagen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Laurentius Church is located in the municipality of Nienhagen in the district of Celle and was built in 1843 based on a design by Ludwig Hellner . After an inspection in 1955, the church had to be renovated and partly rebuilt due to structural defects.

architecture

The church is kept simple and has a brick facade. The original rectangular hall church was lengthened to the rear and two side aisles were added so that the floor plan corresponds to a cross. Windows are let into both side aisles, as well as on the sides of the main nave, so that the church is well flooded with light. This church is a neoclassical building .

History of the building

Campanile

According to a design by the consistorial master builder Ludwig Hellner , the church was built in the years 1841 to 1843 in place of the dilapidated Gothic predecessor church.

During an appraisal of the church building and the church tower in 1955, it was criticized that when the bell was rung, the tower started to move and the walls were damaged. Therefore the dilapidated church tower in particular had to be rebuilt. In the subsequent site planning, the tower should be connected to the church again. The Celle architect Rüdiger Hachtmann (1909–1994) was commissioned with the new building. When the old tower was demolished, it was noticed that the beams of the church roof were also damaged. As a result, the roof also had to be torn down. In the course of this, the community decided to rebuild the tower as a campanile next to the church building. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on April 25, 1957 and the church was consecrated by Regional Bishop Lilje on August 9, 1958, the eve of Laurentius Day .

Currently the Protestant church is still used for church services and at times for smaller concerts.

Directly above the altar is a colorful mosaic window, the altarpiece. It consists of 2000 individual pieces of glass, each between 3 and 4 centimeters thick and combined in a steel structure. It depicts a white lamb in the middle, surrounded by golden-yellow rays, with the lamb's head turned back and blood flowing from a wound on the neck. This blood flows together with the water that flows around the whole altarpiece as a sign of the sacraments, the Lord's Supper and baptism. Under the lamb there are 24 people with crowns on their heads and represent the representatives of the community of saints. In the lower right corner a dark red grid is shown, which is supposed to symbolize a grate and thus to refer to the martyr Lawrence of Rome , who sentenced to death in 258 under Emperor Valerian .

The altar cross is based on the altarpiece. Here, too, the cross consists of mosaic stones that are set in concrete and framed by sheet copper. The crucified Jesus is depicted with a crown of thorns hanging over him.

The font consists of a block of red Weser sandstone and was donated by the von Campe family in 1877.

After the re-consecration in 1958, the parish had to wait until 1966 for a new organ from the Hammer Organ Builders. It has 24 registers with 1644 pipes. The body of the organ was made by the sculptor Ingeborg Steinohrt . Leaves, fruits and birds are depicted, which symbolize the tree of life .

Altar, altarpiece, cross, baptismal and sacristy mosaic are works by the Hamburg artist Gerhard Hausmann .

In the tower hall a stone slab bears the names of 126 war dead from both world wars. The grid on the hall shows the years 1914 and 1918 as well as 1939 and 1945.

The three oolite sheep sculptures arranged around the bell tower were created by the Braunschweig sculptor Magnus Kleine-Tebbe.
