St. Leonhard in Reutern

The Catholic parish church of St. Leonhard in Reutern , a district of the market town of Welden in the Swabian district of Augsburg in Bavaria , was built in 1724/25 and is a protected architectural monument .

history

Today's parish church and former branch church of the parish of Welden was built in 1724/25 in place of a small chapel by master mason Johann Off from Adelsried and master carpenter Hans Gaffler from Welden, presumably according to plans by the plasterer and court architect Balthasar Suiter from Dillingen on the Danube . The foundation stone was laid on April 26, 1724. The construction costs amounted to 1642 guilders. The church is dedicated to the patron saint of cattle and horse patron Leonhard of Limoges .

On August 14, 1788, a lightning strike caused a fire that ignited the church tower and melted the bell. The restoration cost 564 guilders. In 1865 Reutern was raised to its own parish. In 1901/02 the nave of the church, which had become too small, was extended by an axis. In 1950 four new bells were purchased for the church tower. Interior renovations took place in 1990 and 1999.

There has been evidence of a cemetery around the previous building of today's church since the 18th century, which was abandoned in the 20th century.

architecture

The hall building has a basket-arched needle cap barrel and a retracted choir with a three-sided end. To the south is a six-storey tower with an onion dome.

Furnishing

inner space

The high altar with the image of St. Leonhard made Andreas Grabmayr in 1726. The side altars were probably made in Binswangen; they show the portraits of St. Sebastian and St. Joseph, painted by Philipp Jakob Herz. The ceiling frescoes with scenes from the life of St. Leonhard was probably created by the painter Anton Wenzelaus Haffe from Dillingen around 1725. They show the baptism of the saint in the nave, Leonhard as a helper for the poor and his sermon to the animals.

Peal

Two bells were taken down during World War I and three new ones were bought in 1920. Two bells were also dropped during World War II. In 1950 three new bells were purchased from the Wolfhart foundry in Lauingen. Currently the ringing consists of four bells. They bear the inscriptions:

  1. "HL. LEONHARD PLEASE FOR US "
  2. "HL. MARY - QUEEN OF PEACE PLEASE FOR US "
  3. "HL. FLORIAN PROTECT US AGAINST LIGHTNING AND FIRE PROVIDED BY THE VOLUNTEER FIRE SERVICE REUTERN IN THE HOLY YEAR 1950 "
  4. "S. MICHAEL, VENI IN ADJUTOREM POPULO DEI 1920 "
