St. Lewis (former name: Fox Harbor ) is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
location
The community is located on the southeastern Labrador Coast . The settlement is on the north coast of St. Lewis Sound . It is the easternmost permanent settlement on mainland North America.
St. Lewis has a small airfield ( IATA : YFX). The 30 km long Route 513 connects St. Lewis with the Trans-Labrador Highway .
history
The fishing village has existed since the beginning of the 18th century. Between 1954 and 1961, the Fox Harbor Air Station radar station near St. Lewis was operated as part of the Distant Early Warning Line . The radar system was then used by the Canadian coast guard until 2010.
population
In the 2016 census, the municipality had a population of 194. Five years earlier it was 207. Thus, the population has decreased in recent years.
