St. Ludger (Wuppertal)
The St. Ludger Church in Wuppertal - Vohwinkel is a Catholic church belonging to the Wuppertal West Parish Association . It was built from 1961 to 1964 according to plans by the Cologne architect Rudolf Schwarz .
history
Due to the new building areas on the western edge of Vohwinkel from the decades after the Second World War, the parishes of the major denominations grew considerably and new parishes and churches were necessary. On February 24, 1958, Archbishop Cardinal Joseph Frings signed the deed of establishment for the St. Ludger parish at Bremkamp, and at the same time Kaplan Jungblut was appointed parish rector for the new parish. Even without a church of its own, the congregation celebrated the first services in the following year, 1959, in the nearby Catholic elementary school on Corneliusstrasse. On Christmas Eve 1962, the first service was celebrated in the crypt of the St. Ludger Church, which is still under construction. It was not until five years later, on February 26, 1967, that the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Augustinus Frotz the St. Ludger Church.
The St. Ludger Church has been under monument protection since June 22, 2004 with the monument number 1233.
