architecture

The Romanesque church of St. Maria and St. Georg (often still referred to as the Thalbürgel monastery church) is one of the most important sacral monuments in Thuringia and contains the remains of the only Benedictine relay choir in Germany . It is a three-aisled pillar basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan, a three-aisled, two-bay vestibule in the west and two towers in the corners between the western transept wall and the walls of the central nave. The vestibule, the choir and the transept are largely only preserved in the foundation walls and remains of the rising masonry.
