Tower of the St. Marien town church

The Protestant Church of St. Mary is in Bad Berka in the Weimarer Land district in Thuringia . The parish belongs to the Weimar parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The foundation walls of a Romanesque chapel were uncovered in 1906 during excavation work in the area of today's Liebfrauenweg, hence the field name "Liebfrauenweg", which is still preserved today.

The location of today's church island was chosen for reasons of flood protection. The construction of a monastery and church began on the elevated church island in 1240 . Parish and monastery churches were dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Cistercian convent was dissolved after the Peasants' War in 1525. A big fire in 1608 also destroyed the church, rectory and school.

In 1727, Duke Ernst August von Sachsen-Weimar sponsored the reconstruction of the church tower, which was celebrated with a button festival on November 1, 1731 . A stag as a weather vane showed that Berka was the center of a hunting area of the Weimar dukes.

Interior panorama

Using the foundation and outer walls of the old Gothic monastery church, the uniform, stately baroque building of the new church was erected in 1735. The Gothic pointed arch on the east wall and the sandstone walls at the rear entrance bear witness to the older architectural history. In 1739 the sculptor Böhme created the pulpit structure. Two pairs of Corinthian columns, painted in blue since the last renovation, support the pulpit. The formerly floating sky was removed in 1954. The baptismal font depicting the baptism of Jesus by John dates from 1739 and was later changed. The church was consecrated in 1741.

The windows were donated in 1899 by Mr. Mirus from Weimar. The last interior renovation of the church took place in 1989 under the advice of the Weimar restorer Horst Jahresling .

organ

The organ

The organ was installed in 1742/43 by Heinrich Nicolaus Trebs from Weimar on the second gallery on the west side. Johann Sebastian Bach made the disposition . In 1922 the organ builder Böttcher from Weimar converted the organ from mechanical to pneumatic action and placed it on the first gallery. In December 1988 the organ was demolished and in May 1991 the new organ built by the company Böhm from Gotha was consecrated. It has 26 sounding registers with 1,859 pipes on the main work, upper work and pedal and is again based on the mechanical principle. Only the largely original prospectus from 1743 was taken from the old instrument .

Bells

There are three bells in the tower. The largest with the strike note es 1 was cast in 1609 by Hieronymus Möringk from Erfurt. The two younger ones are two bronze bells with the striking tones g sharp 1 and c sharp 2 , which were cast in 2015 in the Maria Laach monastery.
