The core of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Zyfflich dates from the 11th century and was a collegiate church until 1436 .

Building history

Between 1002 and 1021, Count Balderich von Uplage donated a monastery in Zyfflich, for which a new church was started. The capitals built into the central nave arcades, in particular the so-called “Atlantenkapitell”, are among the most important Ottonian large-scale sculptures in the Rhineland.

In the second half of the 14th century the church received a Gothic choir. Probably as a result of the monastery moving to Kranenburg in 1436, the church was reduced in size by demolishing the side aisles and walling up the arcades. In 1718 the church was redesigned in Baroque style and the vaults were replaced by a low wooden ceiling. During a renovation from 1911-14, the southern arcades were exposed again and a new aisle was built.

The church was very badly destroyed in the war winter of 1944/45. The reconstruction, which began in 1950 and was accompanied by archaeological investigations, took into account the original building design. The Ottonian arcades could be opened on both sides by adding side aisles. In 1961 the church was rededicated.

The glass pictures on the windows were designed by Ludwig Baur in 1960 .
