The church of St. Michael was built in 1939 in the north of the then city of Opladen and was the seat of the parish of the same name until 2009.

history

In 1937, the parish of St. Remigius in Opladen had to give in to pressure from the National Socialist city administration and sell the Catholic clubhouse (today Opladen town hall) for 150,000 Reichsmarks . However, as part of the sale, the municipality succeeded in obtaining commitments from the city to build a church in the north of Opladen and to provide the relevant building materials. The cornerstone of the church was laid on November 13, 1938 and the church was built according to designs by Bernhard Rotterdam . It was consecrated on October 15, 1939.

The parish was set up on September 30, 1939, initially as the rectorate of St. Remigius, and on May 1, 1954, it was raised to an independent parish. In 1957 a kindergarten was built, in 1964 the parish and youth home. Since 1987 the parish has been looked after by priests from St. Remigius, since 1998 it has belonged to the parish association of Opladen.

On January 1, 2010, the parishes of St. Three Kings , St. Elisabeth , St. Engelbert , St. Michael and St. Remigius dissolved and merged to form the new parish of St. Remigius Opladen.

Bells

In the year of the consecration of the church, the Otto bell foundry delivered three bronze bells for the newly built Michael’s Church. Two of the three bells were confiscated and melted down shortly afterwards during World War II. Only the small c sharp bell remained for the community. Ten years later, two new OTTO bells were cast to make the chime a three-part chime.
