The St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway (SNAHR) is on January 21, 2019 opened 1.5 km long, balloon-shaped museum - narrow-gauge railway with a track width of 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm) in the St Nicholas Abbey on the island of Barbados .

history

Lookout at Cherry Tree Hill terminus

The Museum Railroad runs from St Nicholas Abbey to Cherry Tree Hill Lookout . It is intended to enable locals and tourists, especially cruise tourists, to take a three-quarter-hour train journey through the varied landscape of Barbados, including stops. The concept is designed for mostly older railway enthusiasts as well as for families with children. At the end of the route at the Cherry Tree viewpoint, the locomotive is turned on a manually operated turntable before starting the return journey. Interested passengers can help with this.

The route was opened on January 21, 2019 and put into operation for scheduled passenger traffic. The narrow-gauge railway has the same gauge as the Barbados Railway , which operated from 1883 to 1937. It was built in a project with a budget of 2 million Barbados dollars (1 million US dollars, € 0.86 million). It offers 12 to 15 new jobs for which 700 applications have been submitted.

Rail vehicles

Most of the trains are pulled by one of the two historic steam locomotives.

The Mallet steam locomotive No. 5 was built by Arnold Jung in Germany in 1914 and was then used at the Ceper Baru Sugar Mill in Central Java , Indonesia . From there it was sold to Graham Lee at the Statfold Barn Railway . After a major overhaul, the locomotive was delivered to Barbados on February 7, 2019. It is heated with coal in the morning and fired with wood during the day.

The two-axle steam locomotive No. 6 was probably built by Ateliers de la Meuse as No. 3242 from 1926. It was originally used for light shunting operations on the SA Hoboken works network in Antwerp, Belgium. The locomotive was purchased for maintenance by the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway and later by the Statfold Barn Railway . From there it was sold to the St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway before being exported to Barbados in 2020.

The historic Badger diesel locomotive and its sister locomotive from the British company Hudswell Clarke are also available, as is a smaller simplex diesel locomotive for track construction work. Three wheelchair-friendly, open passenger cars are used for passenger transport. A multilingual commentary can be played in these via a loudspeaker system.
