History and architecture

West building

The Nikolaikirche in Bernburg was founded as the parish church of the Neustadt in Bernburg. The church was a four-bay Gothic pillar basilica with a rectangular, closed choir and an originally planned two-tower western building . The choir, the oldest part from 1240, has three slightly tapered lancet windows in the east wall . On the north side is the little younger, barrel-vaulted sacristy with gable-topped buttresses, which was extended to the west in a second construction phase. The nave was built until around 1300. Of this structure, only the north wall and the pressed, ogival row of arcades with square pillars from the third quarter of the 13th century are preserved. In the north wall there is a strongly profiled portal with a roughly carved relief of the patron saint above.

South side

The basement of the west building was built around 1300; the associated west portal is provided with fighter-free profiles. The upper parts of the west building were built in the first half of the 14th century; however, only the south tower was completed, which was restored after a fire in 1832. It has large tracery windows and a pointed helmet as sound openings . The north tower was completed with a gable roof.

When the church was not fully converted into a hall church in the early 15th century, the south wall of the building was created with high pointed arch windows and originally two portals, of which only the western portal with its multi-part reveal was preserved. The pillars of the planned high hall space and the vaults were not implemented. The central nave and the south aisle received a common flat ceiling; the lower north aisle was also covered flat. The choir has been completely separated from the nave since 1965 and converted into a community hall.

The Nikolaikirche has been a Protestant church since the introduction of the Reformation in the Principality of Anhalt in 1526. In 1965 the two parishes of St. Nicolai and St. Marien were merged and the Nikolaikirche was leased to the Catholic parish of St. Bonifatius for 99 years . The church suffered considerable damage during the flood of the Saale in 2013 .

Furnishing

The historical furnishings of the otherwise modern church building consists of an octagonal late Gothic font with a shaft ring. A Pentecostal altar was purchased from the St. Elisabeth Provost Church in Halle. In the north aisle there is an impressive stone epitaph of the von Warsleben couple from the third quarter of the 16th century, which shows the deceased in arched niches by the side of a crucifix . The epitaph is architecturally framed by pilasters with Ionic capitals and has a two-zone top. On the outside wall of the choir is a weathered sandstone epitaph from the 16th century with a depiction of the crucifixion and donor figures.
