St. Nikolai (Esbjerg)
St. Nikolai is a Roman Catholic church in Esbjerg , Denmark . It was based on plans by Johan Otto von Spreckelsen built and on 16 November 1969 consecrated . The patron saint of the church is St. Nicholas , the patron saint of seafarers.
Von Spreckelsen did not choose any of the traditional types of church building for St. Nikolai. Using a square floor plan, he designed a cubic room made of white aerated concrete on the outside and white brick on the inside. The flat roof consists of a smaller square placed diagonally to the outer wall, the side dimensions of which come close to that of the Holy of Holies in the Jerusalem Temple . The corners that are cut out are raised, covered flat at the top and provided with windows towards the middle, which give the room indirect daylight. One of these corners is the sanctuary; the benches are aligned with him and a modern picture of the Last Supper between Saints Birgitta and Nikolaus is attached to his back wall. Four more narrow windows are let into the wall surfaces between the corner segments. Here, to the left and right of the main altar, are the Marien and tabernacle altars .
The area of the parish of St. Nikolai extends to Tarm-Skjern , Gørding and south of Ribe . It has 1700 believers.
