St. Nikolaus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Kürten - Dürscheid ( Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

In 1217 the possession of a mill in Dürscheid is documented by the arrival of the Johanniter at Burg Castle . From there a new commander was founded in Herrenstrunden , to which the parish church in Herkenrath belonged. In 1413 the 13th century church in Dürscheid became a subsidiary of Herkenrath and was under the Order of St. John. In 1727 a new larger church was required, the Romanesque tower was left. The year 1727 was embedded in it with iron anchors. In 1895, the decision was made to build a large neo-Gothic church in place of the old nave, plans to demolish the Romanesque tower were not put into practice, so that today a peculiar picture emerges, as the tower's dimensions do not match the proportions fits the new church.

Furnishing

The most striking feature of the church is the window glazing. The three neo-Gothic choir windows were installed shortly after the new nave was built in 1896. They show the motifs of St. Nicholas , the crucifixion of Christ and Jesus with two disciples at the Sea of Galilee . Between 1965 and 1984 Hans Lünenborg designed 14 windows in the nave. These depict the Seven Works of Bodily Mercy and the Seven Works of Spiritual Mercy in scenarios from the lives of biblical figures and saints .
